Chapter 19

“Where’s Sam?” Jolie asked, strolling in the garden behind Lola’s store, Mirra at her heels.

“Ah, she’s being Sam. I swear, you’d think she’d settle down and go at a relaxed pace since she’s moved here, but she’s busier than ever.” Lola walked into the garden carrying a tray with a red teapot that had hand-painted flowers on it and a plate piled high with cookies. It was their weekly teatime date, something that had evolved naturally into a routine. It was nice to carve out a moment of girl time each week to talk about everything – or nothing at all. Periodically, Irma would drop in, or their new friend Avery. Sometimes Prince’s Maria would wander through and cluck over them, making sure everyone was eating and drinking enough. There were no formal invites, but it was understood that anyone was welcome – even one of the men, if they bothered to drop in.

“I don’t think the concept of slowing down has ever really entered her mind. Being busy seems to soothe her in a weird way,” Mirra said, plopping onto a wicker chair with a bright blue cushion. She’d braided her blond hair back and piled it on her head due to the heat, and she wore a loose blush-pink dress that floated around her like a cloud. Jolie had gone for screaming red in a dress that ended at mid-thigh, and gold bracelets stacked on her wrists. She, too, had wound her hair up on top of her head, and gold aviators shielded her eyes from the sun. Some might think the way she dressed was too fancy for the island, but Jolie rarely cared what people thought of her. Bodies were meant to be adorned – why not do so in a lovely manner?

“Jolie, you look decadent,” Lola said, studying Jolie as she sat on a bench by the table and pulled her feet under her. The garden behind Lola’s shop had been transformed into a mixed-use space where people could grab a cup of coffee, spend time painting, or meet for the wine-and-paint class Lola held each week. Palm trees shaded the garden, and pots of hibiscus and other tropical flowers were scattered amidst mismatched chairs, loungers, and squat garden stools and tables. Lanterns, sourced from all over the world, dotted the tables and hung from the trees; at night everything was lit up, making the space look like a colorful fairy garden.

“Obviously not decadent enough for some people,” Jolie said, annoyed at the petulant tone that crept into her voice.

“Ah.” Lola looked to Mirra who nodded back at her.

“He hasn’t paid her any attention,” Mirra said, reaching out to stroke Jolie’s arm.

“I find that very hard to believe. You’re about as impossible to ignore as a shard of glass in your foot.” Lola shook her head as she poured their tea, then winced. “Sorry, that probably wasn’t the best analogy.”

“You’re right, though. Jolie is a powerhouse. It’s rare that a man isn’t distracted or attracted.
